As a designer I enjoy seeing early attempts at particular products. Some are unbelievably ahead of their times, some are successful and some are just epic failures. I found this list of vintage “massage gadgets” @ oobject this morning. You can pick the styling cues and approximate era of production from simply looking at the images, from industrial revolution to 60s/70s automotive and streamlining influences. I have to confess that I probably wouldn’t advise using 98% of the products on that list. I am pretty sure that disc and orbital sanders were designed from or influenced both the Chic GLORIFIER [hilarious name] and the Magic Fingers. I don’t know who came up with these product names, but they are hysterical. I’m going to write to Ryobi and demand that they call their next orbital sander the “Magic Fingers”. I would also like to take mention of the product called Dr Macaura’s Pulsocon. HAHA, who calls a vibrating massager this? [rhetorical question btw]. Go take a look at this misfit list. Although I have taken the humourous side to this list, there is a great deal of design history their to observe.
